Hi! This is Max from PML and today I will show you how to make the Vocoder effect from Kavinsky - Nightcall.
You can download today's full project template in our freebies section.
The first thing we need to do is record our speech:
Let’s load up a synth - we’re going to use Wavetable here:
We’re playing saw waves with some unison.
Once that’s done, we can just use the “Sends only” mode on our synth track, so we don’t hear it.
Let’s put a vocoder on our vocal track.
Parameters in Vocoder:
- “External” mode,
- choose Audio from “Carrier”
- 36 Bands,
- Range 15 kHz
- “Retro” mode
We can then play with the Formant knob.
To add some noise, we can use Erosion:
And to make it more Retro, we can use the “Cabinet” effect.
For the final saturation we’re going to use Pedal with Distortion mode on and mix it in slightly.
That’s it for this tutorial!

Good luck with your production!
